Night of Museums for the last time at the National Archives in Manege Street House
On the Night of the Museum, the National Archives will open the doors of its Manege Street building to visitors for the last time with a special programme entitled "There is a book in the night: a holiday in a picture book". This summer, the National Archives will move to Tallinn, leaving behind its old archive building on Maneeži Street. On the night of the museum opening, there will be a rare opportunity to see the building, which is normally closed to the public.
This Museum Night, we'll talk about how people have been relaxing in Estonia for the past 100 years. Where have you rested? What has been done, eaten, worn and read on holiday? Which book did you put in your bag and take to the beach?

Feminine elegance is associated with a knowledge of behavioural manners that demonstrate a woman's attentiveness, kindness, openness and overall influence on others around her. Maimu Hint's workshop is informative, practical and fun. The group will discuss and practice different techniques on how to add a captivating charisma while remaining yourself. There are a limited number of places available. Please pre-register at arhiivikool.tallinn@ra.ee
19.00 Presentation by Anu Järsi (ERM) "Bathers, athletes and summer queens - pictures of bathing and beach culture 100 years ago".
1920. the foundations of modern beach culture were laid. Summering at the beach became an essential part of modern life. In Estonia, communal beaches were built and beach huts were erected around which beach life revolved. In this lecture, we will take a look at the different beaches and their visitors, the bathing and beach life between the wars, and beach customs and traditions.
20.00 film programme "Sun, Sea and Fresh Air"
The Night of Museums film programme takes the viewer on an idyllic holiday through different decades. Travelling back in time from the second half of the 1930s to the early 1970s, the viewer can follow how holiday destinations, activities and even holidaymakers change over time. Of course, there is an element of propaganda, which is why what we see in the newsreels is mostly an embodiment of reality. The film programme will be followed by a thematic quiz, with prizes being drawn for all the correct answers.
During the evening, two workshops will take place in the conservation laboratory. In the first workshop we will bind and decorate small notebooks. In the second workshop, we will make collage postcards inspired by archival material to send to relatives and friends while on holiday.
Tours take place every hour from 18.00, starting from the lobby of Manege 4. The last tour starts at 22.00. The English-language tour starts at 20.30.
