Program

The Tallinn Town Hall is over a couple of hundred years older than the first book in the Estonian language. It was built on Tallinn’s marketplace more than 700 years ago, symbolizing the right granted by the king to merchants to govern the city and administer justice. The oldest codices of Lübeck law confirmed for Tallinn are as old as the Town Hall itself, dating back to the second half of the 13th century. Come and admire what these rare law books looked like!

Since in the early days of the Town Hall, literacy was a privilege reserved for only a few members of the upper class, artworks were used to tell stories to viewers. In the Town Hall, these artworks date from the 14th to the 17th century and depict characters ranging from the Bible to medieval knightly romances.

The oldest Town Hall in Northern Europe is waiting for you to discover its stories!
