Program
You are invited to visit the beautiful nature of Porkuni and their 21 metre high observation tower. In the museum, you can learn about the origins of the national stone, snippets of history and fascinating legends.
A fortress was built on the island in the middle of Lake Porkun in 1479, but it was destroyed during the Livonian War (1558-1583). All that remains is the gate tower. Through the five floors of the tower you can get an overview of Estonia’s national stone – limestone. The exposition introduces the history of limestone, its fossils, distribution and use. There is a rich collection of limestone artefacts from all over Estonia. At the top of the tower is a viewing platform. It offers a view of Lake Porkun, the manor complex and the surrounding area.
