18.15 - 19.45 (starting from Toompea) Library tour from Toompea to Tõnismäki "National Library - Houses through the ages" (Knighthood building, Kiriku plats 1).
- Tour in Estonian. Tour guide: Kalju Tammaru
The Night of the Museums will include a tour of the different buildings of the National Library (NL). We will start in Toompea, where the Knight's Household Building was used by the library throughout the Soviet period until the new building was completed in 1993. On the way down from Toompea, we will walk around the main RaRa building, designed by architect Raine Karb, a monumental shrine to books that has been under renovation for several years. The RaRa building on Tõnismäe is a real megastructure - like a city within a city, with rooms that are difficult to see at first glance, each with different functions. Built into the Tõnismäe, the building has several underground floors, internal walkways, terraces and many other interesting spaces. The main RaRa building is the youngest cultural monument in Estonia. A thorough restoration will breathe new life into the whole complex and bring it closer to the people.
