Vabamu Museum of Occupations and Freedom

Museum address:

Toompea 8b, Tallinn

Entrance 1 euro

Accessibility information:

Wheelchair Visitors

Visitors in wheelchairs can navigate Vabamu independently with the assistance of a companion. There is an elevator to move between floors, and ramps connect the different levels. Since many rooms are small, a smaller-frame wheelchair is recommended. A narrower wheelchair is available at the museum. There is an accessible restroom on the first floor, and an accessible parking space next to the museum.

Visitors with Strollers

Visitors with strollers can comfortably move around Vabamu Museum thanks to the elevator and ramps. Additionally, a lightweight stroller can be borrowed from the ticket desk if desired. The accessible restroom on the first floor also has a changing table.

Hard of Hearing and Deaf Visitors

Visitors who are hard of hearing or deaf can explore the exhibitions with the help of e-guide transcriptions and read texts introducing the exhibits. Groups of visitors with hearing impairments are welcome to participate in tours and museum lessons with their sign language interpreter.

Visually Impaired and Blind Visitors

Depending on their vision impairment, the museum can be visited either independently or with a companion. Just like regular visitors, blind guests can use a smartphone-based e-guide for assistance. Additionally, there are tactile pathways and a tactile portable floor plan available. The spaces are mostly dimly lit, but contrasting room signs and labels have been used. The texts of the e-guide are in white on a black background. Visiting with a guide dog is permitted.

Description Translations

The permanent exhibition “Freedom Has No Borders” at the Museum of Occupations and Freedom (Vabamu) is accessible to visually impaired individuals thanks to the available description translations. Visitors can also explore room plans printed on tactile paper on-site. A guiding line is available to assist movement throughout the exhibition, along with an e-guide for all visitors.

Program

At Vabamu, you can explore not only our permanent exhibition “Freedom Without Borders” but also the temporary exhibition “Defending Freedom: Estonian Civil Society in the Russo-Ukrainian War.” Additionally, visitors can discover the new audio journey of the permanent exhibition “From “Such people” to LGBT activism.”

The year 2025 is the Year of the Estonian Book, aimed at celebrating our rich literary tradition. We invite you to share your book recommendations with us! Posters have been set up at Vabamu where you can write down your favorite books and read the suggestions of other visitors.

Moreover, you have the chance to take home a new book, as Vabamu staff will be bringing in their own books for sharing that they have already read.

Throughout the evening, the drama group KOKK (Artistically Everything is Correct) from the 32nd Secondary School will present historical short performances, adding even more excitement to the night.

To keep the atmosphere pleasant and enjoyable, Vabamu's director, Ivo Lille, will personally play music.

Vabamu also features a café where you can enjoy delicious snacks and drinks!

The last entry to the Vabamu permanent exhibition at 22:30.
