Program

Museum Night 2026

During Museum Night, Kumu’s permanent exhibitions will be open to visitors: Landscapes of Identity: Estonian Art 1700–1945, Conflicts and Adaptations: Estonian Art in the Soviet Era (1940–1991) and The Future is in One Hour: Estonian Art in the 1990s.
There will be 30-minute guided tours in the permanent exhibitions in several languages, creative workshops, and an extensive courtyard programme. The latter includes an orienteering game for families and a tent school by the artist Pankaj Tiwari, which features an extensive programme titled Exercises in Coming Together, launched as part of Kumu’s 20th anniversary.

Museum Night programme:

6–11 pm Discovery Tour of Kumu’s permanent exhibitions. The route is available at the Kumu ticket office, both on paper and via QR code.

6–11 pm Independent orienteering game in Kumu’s courtyard. Instructions are available at the Kumu ticket office.

6–8.30 pm “Soundscapes”, an open workshop for children.

6–11 pm Exercises in Coming Together. The programme Exercises in Coming Together, taking place in the tent school in the courtyard, was initiated due to the need to learn to come together again in an increasingly complex and conflict-ridden world. During Museum Night, the tent school will offer food, opportunities to participate in discussions, and voices speaking about the future of cultural education.

Open exhibitions:

3rd floor

The permanent exhibition Landscapes of Identity: Estonian Art 1700–1945 introduces older local art, where Baltic German, Russian and Estonian traditions intertwine against the backdrop of Estonia’s multi-ethnic history. The focus is on the role of art in society and its influence on the self-images of different communities.

4th floor

On the fourth floor of the Kumu Art Museum, the permanent exhibition Conflicts and Adaptations: Estonian Art in the Soviet Era (1940–1991) will be open to the public. The permanent exhibition offers a perspective on Estonian art in the second half of the 20th century, which was largely shaped by conflicts and adaptations to the new political situation following World War II.

Also open will be the exhibition The Future Is in One Hour: Estonian Art in the 1990s, the starting point of which is the abrupt rupture that occurred in Estonia’s newly independent society following the end of the Cold War. In Estonia, the 1990s were a period of transition after Soviet occupation, during which a liberal democratic society based on a market economy was built.
